Installing your AI-Ready files on Shopify
Last updated 19 September 2026
Shopify gives you the robots.txt editor, theme templates and ordinary pages, and keeps the sitemap to itself. Four of the five install normally, llms.txt included; the sitemap is covered here honestly.
1 of the 5 cannot be installed on Shopify at all. Those are marked, with the reason, rather than left for you to discover.
robots.txt
Files: robots.txt
This is the file that tells search engines and AI crawlers which parts of your site they may read.
- From the Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then the active theme's menu, then Edit code.
- Click Add a new template, choose robots, then Create template — this creates robots.txt.liquid.
- Replace its contents with the robots.txt file we sent, then save.
sitemap.xml
Files: sitemap.xml
This lists your pages so crawlers can find them without guessing.
Not possible on Shopify. Shopify builds sitemap.xml itself from your products, pages and collections, and does not let a store replace it with a custom file.
Your sitemap stays Shopify's own, which already lists your live pages, so there is nothing from our file to install here.
llms.txt and llms-full.txt
Files: llms.txt, llms-full.txt
These give AI systems a short plain-text map of your site and a fuller copy of its content, in the format they read fastest.
- Shopify already publishes an llms.txt and an llms-full.txt for every store, written for shopping assistants. To publish ours in their place, go from the Shopify admin to Online Store, then the active theme's menu, then Edit code.
- In the left sidebar, right-click the Templates folder, choose New File, name it llms.txt.liquid and press Enter. Paste the contents of the llms.txt file we sent, then save.
- Do the same with a second file named llms-full.txt.liquid and the contents of llms-full.txt. Shopify then serves both at yourdomain.com/llms.txt and yourdomain.com/llms-full.txt; its /agents.md for shopping assistants stays as it is.
The For-AI page
Files: for-ai.txt
This page states plainly what your business does and how to reach it, written for an AI system reading in one pass rather than a person browsing.
- From the Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Pages.
- Click Add page, paste the content of for-ai.txt, set its URL handle to for-ai, and save.
The identity block
Files: organization.jsonld
This is the structured data that tells search engines and AI systems unambiguously who you are — the same job a business card does for a person.
- From the Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then the active theme's menu, then Edit code.
- Open theme.liquid and paste the contents of organization.jsonld inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag, just before the closing </head> tag.
- Save the file.
When you are finished
Open the verification link in the email that came with your kit. We re-scan the site and send back a one-page sheet listing every file, whether it is live, and what moved. It lands in your inbox by the next morning.
If you never click it, we run the same check thirty days after delivery and send the sheet anyway. Nothing about the install expires, and nothing here needs a developer on standby.
For anything this guide does not cover, Shopify’s own documentation is here: Shopify Help Center | Editing robots.txt.liquid.
